Happy Mother's Day!

To my mother:
the one who couldn't decide on my name until I arrived
who challenged me but let me make my own mistakes
who to this day will still babies me and my older brother
because once a mom, always a mom.
I love you!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Melissa from TLNSOW came up with questions for husbands to answer.  We were supposed to answer as well to see how many the husbands got right.  I thought this would be fun because my husband has never been on this blog before!  Plus, we don't celebrate Valentine's in real life, so I thought this might be a way to celebrate with the blogging community.

P.S. for those of you who aren't married or with someone, my favorite Valentine's ever was with a few friends in high school.  We stayed up all night watching movies and even made a 5am run to Kroger (to get food or something? I don't remember).  It was awesome.  Why don't I celebrate with husband?  Eh, I don't do the mushy gushy, I'm on a diet, and I tend to kill flowers within days.

Shall we proceed to the Q&A?  If there are any other questions you want to ask husband about him, me, etc, feel free to let me know in the comments!

Format =
Question? "Husband's answer."
My commentary/what I wrote down if we answered the questions differently.
November 2011
1. How long have you been married? "8 months."
Attaboy.

2. Where was your first date? "Twilight/Arby's"
Then we did the cool kids thing and stayed up all night with a few other friends talking and watching movies (literally, my girlfriend and I went to our dorms at 5am that morning... then continued to chat).  I think that was literally the last night I stayed up all night.  I'm such an old lady, now.  I believe that was the night of her first kiss with her now husband.... me and my husband had our first kiss like a few weeks after that night.  (Proof that boys and girls can be together overnight and keep it G-rated.)

3. Who first said, "I love you"? "Amy"
I had already had two serious relationships before him, so I kind of already knew that he was different/special.  He, on the other hand, had never had a serious relationship so he wasn't so sure until maybe a few months later.  No worries, I was a good sport. ;)

4. What were your wedding colors? "Yellow, green, etc."
Ivory, pale pink, buttercream yellow, green.  Close enough, right girls?  He's a guy and he just knew we had a garden themed wedding.  Though the bridesmaid dresses were pink...... so shouldn't that been part of the answer?

5. What is her most commonly used phrase?  "'I can't find my phone!'"
Yep, that's right.  I don't have a special location for it in my purse.  I tend to leave it in various places. And because of school/work/the hospital, it's almost always on silent (yep, not even necessarily on vibrate).  Twice in the course of our relationship have I actually left it at an eatery and had to turn around and go back hoping that someone didn't take it.  The last time was February 8, 2013.

6. Who is her celebrity crush? "Liam Neeson."
Yes, I put that, too.  I love me some Liam Neeson.

7. If she was ordering drinks for both of you, what would you get? "A - mudslide, me - Stella."
My response: "me: sweet tea or water, him: sweet tea or coke."  We misinterpreted the question, obviously.  But, for the record, I haven't ordered a mudslide since 2009 (that's right, I know the year because it was a friend's 21st birthday dinner).  If it's drinks it would be: a Moscato for myself and a beer selection for him (Stella, probably, but that's not often an option).

8. What is the best meal she has ever cooked you?  "Lasagna."

9. What is the worst meal she has ever cooked you? "Some vegan dish... tofu or something."
It was a ratatouille recipe gone wrong.  It either was too salty or too vinegary....  I couldn't even eat it and I'm all about 100% vegetarian/vegan.  There was no tofu, for the record.

10. What would she say is your most annoying habit? "Swearing."
Why, yes.  I used to never curse.  Then I got in to nursing school.  Now, it's a habit we both must break, especially for when there are kiddos in the picture.

11. What is the last thing she does before she goes to bed? "Watches TV and reads blogs."
Well, I don't necessarily read blogs, I just check my phone.  I do, however, fall asleep to the TV 95% of the time -- it's the only way I can fall asleep most nights.  I am rarely too exhausted to fall asleep without it.

12. If you could throw out one item of her clothing what would it be? "Boots - all of them."
Yep, I knew he was going to say that.  He apparently isn't a big boot fan.  I don't care and collect them anyways. :)

13. What would you say is your favorite thing about her? "Infinite passion without bounds."
Awh, now isn't that sweet..... I thought he would say it's that I run errands and cook..... oops.  -1 point for Amy.

14. What's her go-to drink at Starbucks? "Chai tea soy latte."
And he likes it, too. ;)

15. What's her blog's name?  "The Charming Blog"
The man is my biggest supporter, he probably knows more about my blog than I do... okay, not really.

Christmas Holiday Recap

Mr. Charming and I did a great job dividing up our time for the holidays.  I was so happy because we are both very close to our family and wanted to make sure we were fair in splitting up time.

Friday 21 December 2012
(aka, the "end of the world")
Husband and I opened our gifts and had our own little Christmas celebrations just the two of us.  He got me a pair of shark slippers, a beautiful necklace, a watch, and earpods (the Apple's newest earphones).  I got him a North Face book bag, two bracelets (one made by Velina Bracelets with his saint, Padre Pio, on it), and some SodaStream accessories (his family chipped in to buy the SodaStream and I got the syrups and extra containers).  Then we each did a few stocking stuffers.

Saturday 22 December 2012
I had a few things to work on, like installing a new blog design for a client, and, other than going to Mass together that evening, we didn't really spend too much time together.  We did do a lot of packing and such to get ready for the holidays.

Sunday 23 December 2012
We dedicated the Sunday to celebrating "Christmas Eve" with my family: my parents, my brother, and my grandfather.  We had our traditional Christmas breakfast which was a sausage-egg casserole.  My grandfather insisted on bringing over doughnuts.  We also delved in to fruit.  It was a lovely meal.  Afterwards, we sat around and talked.  I got a little emotional because it was hitting me that this year would be different than other Christmases (I am all about tradition), but my mother cheered me up.  We continued to play games, including a Dungeons and Dragons and Dominion, a family favorite.  We also opened gifts, since we open gifts on Christmas Eve and this was our "Christmas Eve celebration."  Of course, we poorly planned this, so I told my brother we would open presents on Christmas and so he didn't bring them.  That's okay, we still had 95% of our tradition.

I got two sweaters, a nutcracker (I get one every year, you'll see some from previous years in a picture above with the Christmas tree), and a few other things.  Stockings would be opened on Christmas.

Around 5pm we left for husband's parents' house where we would join his family (parents and one sister) and his sister's fiancé's family (the fiancé, two parents, and a brother).  We all had a nice dinner together then practically passed out after they left.

Monday 24 December 2012
We woke up and tried to settle when to open presents.  Mr. Charming was anxious to find out what his "special gift" was (the SodaStream since he didn't know yet).  I was anxious because I was going to fill up the containers and have them get chilly so that they would be ready for when we opened presents.  We finally decided we would do it before lunch and so we did.  We all gathered around the Christmas tree there and took pictures then sorted out everyone's presents and opened them.  I asked for (and received): the Star Wars complete saga on Blu-Ray, a fireproof safe, and a jar of marmite.  I also got a nice little tea pot with flowering teas, a can of Haggis, and a few other little lovely items.

One thing I do every Christmas for our families is make a calendar from Shutterfly.  It's always a huge success.  Husband's parents insist that is all they need.  So, of course, I gifted a calendar to husband's parents, my parents, and husband's sister.  I also gifted a photobook from the wedding to everyone.

Then, we proceeded to eat lunch, hang out, go to Christmas mass, then play some games on husband's Xbox Kinect (tennis, darts, skiing, zumba).

Tuesday 25 December 2012
After a fourth night of getting very little sleep, I woke up not feeling so well and was thus lagging a bit.  But sister-in-law's fiancé and my father-in-law were making cinnamon roll waffles and that might just be two of my favorite breakfast items combined in to one so I had plenty of motivation to cheer up.  We had breakfast, packed the cars with our stuff, and left.  It was time for husband and I and his sister and her fiancé to head off to our families.  It was a great few days with them, and now we were headed to spend more time with my family.  Because even though we are much closer to my family, we still rarely have quality time with them.

At my parents' my brother came early to set up my mom's presents.  Since he's a boy, he didn't really wrap presents, but I was totally okay with that, because that's his character.  I had two things on my Christmas wish list for him (because my brother always wants to give me technology and this year there was absolutely nothing that I needed in terms of technology so I wanted to give him an idea of what I actually want and need).  The list consisted of an Erin Condren notebook (with line item instructions) and an Epiphanie camera bag.  Fortunately, he bought me the latter (I had changed my about which planner style I wanted after I gave him the wishlist).

We then proceeded to eat dinner when my grandfather arrived and then when he left afterwards we played a few rounds of 7 Wonders, one of husband and my's favorite games.

Then it was bed time.  It was an exhausting long weekend.

Wednesday 26 December 2012
Husband got the opportunity to work from home so when he finished up all his work we watched the first two movies in the Star Wars saga (Episode I & Episode II -- we went in order of the story, but I am so excited to get to IV-VI).

VELINA Bracelets

SHOP VELINA

Where does the name Velina come from?
VELINA was our mom’s nickname when she was little, growing up in Italy. We decided to call it that because it represents something close to us, part of where we come from.

What inspires the names for the bracelets/designs?
It depends on the stone used in the design. Depending on where that stone comes from, what its properties are … sometimes our designs are inspired by certain cultures; so we tend to pick names that reflect that.

Where do you get you materials?
We have different suppliers we work with. Most of our wood & bone is from the Philippines, and we get top quality stones from all over the world; from Asia, to the Middle East, to Russia, to certain regions of North and South America.

What sparked the dream of starting your own jewelry business?
We’ve always been into fashion and have worked in several boutiques, and were always inspired by the designs around us. Even since we were little, we have always had an interest in doing something entrepreneurial. The jewelry started out as a hobby at first, and the more we did it, the more passionate we became about it.

What types of obstacles have you faced throughout the journey?
It’s definitely been challenging to balance running a business while also still being in school. We refuse to do anything halfway. Which means a lot of late nights of work for us! We're always trying to deliver the best quality in our work, both with VELINA and in our school/work. When you design and create something, there’s a certain level of vulnerability involved when you’re putting it out there. Just to see how people are going to respond to what you create. Initially establishing a brand that is recognized for its high quality was definitely an obstacle. But it’s all the positive feedback that we get from people that continues encouraging us and keeps us going.

How many years in the making was the whole idea?
Well, VELINA is about to celebrate its first birthday this Thanksgiving. Before its launch, we'd say that planning and branding first started about a year before that. But the whole idea of us owning our own business has been something we’ve always wanted to do. That vision of us two working together has always been in the back of our minds.

You spent a summer in Milan, how did that effect your business?
Oh my gosh, in so many ways! This summer was one we’ll never forget. We come from an Italian background, so immediately we felt at home, and we just fell in love with Milan; the city, the people, the lifestyle. Tina took fashion styling courses at a fine arts school, and had the opportunity to work with professional photographers and models in her own photo shoots. She got to learn the aspects of the fashion industry in the fashion capital of the world; it was amazing! She attended private runway shows, learned about different cultures; the school had so many international students. She met such incredible people and made so many new friends; one of them in particular became a great friend of hers, and he is a photographer for Elle Magazine. She was able to incorporate VELINA into her shoots, and she received so much positive response and support from everyone, it was incredible! It really gave us a whole other platform to expand VELINA and increase our network in the fashion industry.

What new things did you learn and experience that may have bettered Velina?
We learned a lot about trend forecasting, and we got to see a lot of what’s next, what’s coming up in the fashion world. So we're able to use that as inspiration when creating new designs.

Tell us a little about the men’s line?
VELINA For Him has been doing great! It started as just a possibility to have a men’s line … we just wanted to try it. The conversations we had with different guy friends lead us to start designing for them. Men’s jewelry is becoming more and more popular, as a means of expression. So we tried it, and it’s been doing really well!

How did it feel to have a celebrity wearing Velina?
Um… surreal! We were in Italy at the time. Tina was checking her email in the hotel lobby when we received the order, and we had to re-read it several times to believe it! It was so incredible to see the photos of Joe Jonas wearing VELINA at his birthday party. We used to have such a crush on him! And to think that now he’s wearing something that we created?! It’s crazy!
