Creating a Mission Statement

Stop for just a minute and think about your three favorite blogs…the ones that you find yourself coming back to again and again. You get online, check your email and facebook, and then click the link to those blogs from your favorites bar, eager to read what is posted today.

Why do you love those blogs so much? Why do you think you are drawn to them? What keeps you coming back looking for more?

Is that how you wish other people felt about your blog?

The first step in creating an online space you love (and that other people will keep coming back to) is to dig deep into who you are and what you want your blog to be. What are your goals for your blog? What makes you unique, and why is that meaningful? How does that apply to and interest readers? What types of things do you like to blog about now and how can you develop those themes into even more meaningful content? Use these concepts to form a blog mission statement.

Yes! You’ll be amazed at how just a statement of intent can keep the writing and curating of your blog consistent and inspiring…for you and your readers.

Think back to your three favorite blogs. Do a bit of research on them and see if you can identify their mission statement. It won’t be written down necessarily, but their intent will be clear. Take my blog for example. My mission statement is actually in my blog header and clear for all to see…Shadylane Blog is all about “celebrating the everyday.” My posts are full of real life stories with a positive outlook and encouragement to savor the little things.

Write down your own personal blog mission statement and refer to it all the time to make sure what you’re posting matches your intent. Always be true to who you are and what you love. This will help you do develop a clear voice in your writing and simplify your direction. A blog with an authentic voice and memorable content will become a favorite of others and something you’ll love to write and work on.

And if while going through this process you find that the look or design of your blog doesn’t match your mission statement, then feel free to find a designer to work with. Having a mission statement completed and ready to share with them will kick your new design off on the right foot. You and your designer will be glad to have that to refer back to. And it will be an invaluable tool for the future of your blog.

  1. This is a really great idea! I have a kind of tagline, but I don't think I've every written down a mission statement. Something to think about!

    Happy Monday!
