Getting Motivated

I asked you the other week how you motivate yourself.  I know that I used to be the type of person to love taking on projects and would be great a multi-tasking and was just always going, going, going.  Then, 2011 hit and quite a few things changed.  Now, I need a little bit more motivation to do things and I know that a lot of people sometimes need that extra push some days.  So here were some suggestions from you all:

  • Don't think about it too much - just do it! :D
  • I usually like doing a collage of pictures/words that inspire me ...I have made several of them!
  • I turn on my favorite song in the world and dance around the room!

  • To help motivate myself... I make lists! If I form a plan, it makes it waaay easier for me to start. There’s just something about checking off those little boxes on the side that make me so giddy!

  • I don't think I ever really "create" motivation for myself. A lot of the time, something else pushes me.. ..if I somehow pick up some motiviation, I try to roll with it as long as possible!
  • I motivate myself by thinking about how I'll be able to relax once I've done everything I need to do. It helps me work hard and fast to accomplish my list of To-do's.

  • Lists, time limits and rewards.....I have to motivate myself to grade papers. I tell myself if I do 8 then I can stop and have a tea and biscuits...or can call my friend for 5 minutes.

I did a little research on how to motivate oneself and here are some of the best tips and ideas.

Do something small and create a flow.  Just clean your desk. Or pay your bills. Or wash the dishes. You just need to get started. When you have finished that small task you’ll feel more alert and ready to go do the next thing. You just to get started to get motivated. So if you really don’t feel like doing anything, start with something small and work your way out up (source).

Break it down.  Break down your task or project into small steps. And just start with focusing on that first small step. When you are done move on to the next and just focus on that one. The small successes will keep your motivation up and keeping your focus away from the big picture stops you from becoming overwhelmed and discouraged. It’s amazing how much you can get done if you follow this simple method (source).

Let go of the past.  Believe it or not, one of the best demotivators is your past. Your past can drag you down before you realize it. Your past can give you a heavy burden on your shoulders.

The good news is it’s a burden you don’t have to carry. Take it off your shoulder and leave it. You might make mistakes in the past. You might disappoint others with what you did. But it’s over. It’s already in the past and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Today is a new day and you have the chance to start again. No matter how bad your past might be, you still have a bright future ahead waiting for you. Just don’t let the burden of the past stop you (source).

Go for Five.  Start working for five minutes. Often that little push will be enough to get you going (source).

Kickstart Your Day.  Plan out tomorrow. Get up early and place all the important things early in the morning. Building momentum early in the day can usually carry you forward far later (source).

Condition your body.  It takes physical energy to take action.  Get your food and exercise budget in place and follow it like a business plan (source).

"Finish each day and be done with it.
You have done what you could."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

  1. So many great ideas! Doing something small / starting for five minutes really helps me get going. The problem always is waiting for something or someone (like the husband to cut something up with the powersaw) =) xo Anja
