Kyma Birthday Dinner

To celebrate both my dad and I's birthdays, my family went to Kyma in Buckhead.  It is by far my favorite Greek restaurant.

Kyma's fresh cuisine mixes amazing flavors together in a unique but refresing way.  Our favorite was the fresh grilled octopus.  I also loved the melitzanosalata hummus (with eggplant and walnuts).  The restaurant serves tapas style, which makes it even better for sharing and sampling.  Be careful, though, you can walk out with a hefty bill if you don't be careful!  However if you're just looking to share a few amazing items, it's priced about right with tapas starting at $7.

If you like Greek food and drinks, this is definitely the place to come, especially with it's lovely atmosphere.  The grilled octopus is the most popular dish on the menu, but you can also get whole fish for the table, sardines, all types of Greek foods like dormades and spanakopitas, oysters, and more.  I'm not a big fan of the desserts because I don't like raw honey, but there's a banana dish that is superb (really only the banana part; the chocolate cake, which is flourless, is a little too dry tasting for my liking, but I did love the banana!).

You may also get lucky and spot a celebrity.  For Kyma in particular, Vince Vaughn and Jason Bateman have both been spotted there.  However, I would just go for the food alone!

Smartphone Photo Apps

Here's a little list of some of my favorite iPhone Photo applications.  Some are available on other devices.

In order to give you a visual I used the same picture for each program and just chose some relatively different effects and filters to give you a good representation of the program.

Original Image:

Instagram
(free)
iOS + Android

Enough said.

GifBoom
(free)
iOS + Android

Creates GIFs, or illustrations, using different photos.  Sort of like a slideshow or animation.

To view the Gif from GifBoom, click here.

Editing
For editing tools, this app has Orientaton, crop, effects, frames, text options.

Saving + Sharing
Share with Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, SMS, Email.

BeFunky
(free)
iOS + Android + PC
Picture has "Beautify," Vintage 2 filter, and Grunge 2 frame.

Editing
You can edit the image (exposure, brightness, "beautify," hue, blur, sharpen, etc), there are filters and the option to determine the opacity of the filter (eg, 100% opacity means it's altered the image 100%, whereas 25% means there's only a slight application of the filter to the image), you can add a frame, and add text.

Formatting
The best part about this is that it uses the original size of the image (eg, it doesn't force you to make the image a square).

Saving + Sharing
You can then name and save the image.  You can share with the BeFunky community, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or Flickr... you cannot upload to Instagram straight from the app.

    Photosynth
    (free)
    iOS + Windows + PC

This is a great Microsoft app for creating panoramic images.  I don't have an example for you using the original image, but it's definitely my favorite app currently available for creating panoramic images because you just pan the camera across the subject or landscape and it will create a panorama for you!  You normally then have to go in and crop the picture so that there isn't negative space around the corners where the app didn't capture a subject, but this is comparable to even creating a Panorama in Photoshop.

    Camera+
    ($0.99)
    iOS
Picture has Fluorescent scene, HDR effect, Sprockets frame.

    Editing
Through edit, there are options for scenes (such as Clarity, Cloudy, Fluorescent light, and more to sort of color correct), adjusting the orientation, cropping the image, effects which includes 27 filters and the option to purchase another set of nine (and you can adjust the intensity or opacity), and 18 options for frames plus the option to add a caption in the frames section.

    Formatting
Use can use the original size of the image.

    Saving + Sharing
You can upload photos to sort of a "board" called Lightbox where you can store images that you can then edit, share, or save.

    PhotoMage
    (free)
    iOS only

    Unknown filter used.

    Editing
PhotoMage is very Instagram-like, if you are familiar with Instagram.  You have 15 filters to choose from and you just apply them to your image.  Very easy.  The only additional feature, compared to Instagram, is that you can add a caption or text with six fonts to choose from.  You currently do not have any font size options.

    Formatting
Like Instagram, a square format is required.

    Saving + Sharing
You have options to share to the camera roll, or share via email, Twitter, Facebook, or text.

    Perfect Photo
    ($0.99)
    iOS only

Invert (all red, green, and blue inverted) and Sharpen.

    Afterlight
    ($0.99)

    Editing
There are a variety of tools at your disposal in Afterlight: Clarify, Brightness, Contract, Saturation, Exposure, Highlights, Shadows, Fade, Highlight Tone, Mid Tone, Shadow Tone, Vignette, Grain, Sharpening.

There are also more than 21 filters, including about a dozen "guest filters," as well as 23 textures.

You are free to use the original image size in dimensions, however you can also crop your image.

    Saving + Sharing
You can save with three different image resoluations: small, medium, max.  Then you can save and share with the camera roll, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Email, Postcard, or other apps.

There is also an Fx Studio which includes 200(!) effects and filters under the categories of Scene, HDR, Blur, Art, Vintage, Grunge, Beauty, Professional, Color Splash, Black & White.

    Formatting
You can use original size and dimensions, or you can crop your image.

    Sidenote
Over was used to add text to the pictures from programs that do not have text capability: Afterlight, Lumie, Perfect Photo, BeFunky.

Bows, buns, SweetApple: a coffee day date

Cardigan: Charming Charlie; white 3/4 sleeve top: Forever 21; skirt: pick your plum deal; bow: Aidie's Hideaway on Etsy

On Sunday, Mr. Charming and I went to try out a new local coffee & donut shop called SweetApple Coffee & Donut.  He'd be craving a donut and I am up for anything new-- plus I've been so exhausted lately (still trying to recover from an illness) that coffee sounded like perfection.

So, we popped on over to SweetApple to discover that they (a) have fresh brewed local coffee (Rev) and (b) have both yeast (traditional) and cake donuts!  What a fun surprise!  They also have delicious pig-in-a-blankets.  We chose to each have a cup of jo for ourselves to try the local brew, I had a chocolate glazed donut with sprinkles (though I wanted a few others, I opted for a traditional favorite for the first visit), husband had a cinnamon twist, and we shared a pig-in-a-blanket and milk.  It was all so delicious and such a cute set up in the shop!

    #DIHworkshop by @HomeDepot

On Tuesday of last week I became aware of this awesome program hosted by The Home Depot.  It’s a program for women called Do-It-Herself workshops (#DIHworkshop).  Upon hearing about this opportunity, I texted a good friend of mine and invited her to join me at a location close to where she lives.  I was sold and she was sold!  It would be a fun (and free!) girls night for us.

The event that we attended was at the Cumberland Home Depot store in Atlanta.  According to the girls running the workshop, this is an event that happens every third Thursday of each month.  Each session goes over a different project and they will teach you and provide the materials for it.  The projects are either Pinterest-inspired ones (like the one I attended last week) or some fun DIY home improvements.

Our session's project: a mirror framed with tiles!

I partnered up with some great ladies already at the event and we all attempted the project.  It was definitely an easy project, it was just our first time using grout!  We learned about the different types of grout (sandy versus nonsandy) and when to use each type.  The Home Depot team was so helpful and informative.  Plus, there were some nice refreshments there, which was nice because it was around dinnertime.  My friend who came with me was actually pretty familiar with grout and ended up doing a great job taking the lead so that the other Home Depot members could help other tables.

    Thoughts
I personally think it is such a great event!  I am definitely planning on attending some more!!  There is a Home Depot a little bit closer to me that I would go to next time so that I’m not late because of traffic.  But I’m always eager to learn more about DIY projects for the home and the different tools you could use.  You can find out about what workshops are coming up in your area by using www.homedepot.com or using the Facebook page.

Kudos, Home Depot, on the great event idea!

WW: Picaboo versus Shutterfly Photo Books Review

You've gotten the wedding pictures, you may have ordered the large pictures through your photographer or elsewhere, now what?  Now, you can make a photo book!  As soon as I got my pictures on CDs I went to work on photo books.  They are not only wonderful things to have in your house, they make great presents to family and wedding party.

One of my photobooks displayed as wall art.

    Picaboo
I had purchased a Groupon for Picaboo to get a few photo books because they offer the lay-flat pages that are ever so awesome for photo books.  I got to work and was incredibly disappointed by the lack of layouts for Picaboo.  For our wedding photo books, I wanted black backgrounds and just fill the pages with images and no text.  For some reason, this wasn't really working the way that I wanted for Picaboo, but I had the Groupons and had several photo books I needed to gift.  I ended up getting: two 6x8's to gift, two 8.5 x 11's with lay-flat pages to gift, and a 12x12 with lay-flat pages for us, since those were covered by the Groupons.  Overall, I was satisfied with the final products, except one of the 8.5 x 11's had some pages with ink smearing.  It wasn't on the pictures, it was on the binding, so I didn't want to deal with complaining since I was, by then, full swing in school.  I did get the books pretty fast after I ordered them with regular shipping.  Last thing I wasn't a big fan of was the user interface and I don't think it's something I would get used to.

What I got: for each photo book, I got the Classic Custom with photos that can take up the front cover, spine, and back cover.  I didn't want the leather or linen-bound.  I wanted a picture to go all over the front cover and that not only seemed like the most appealing option, it was what the Groupon covered.  There are many different styles, however, and you can go here for styles and pricing.

    Shutterfly
As you all may or may not know, I am a huge fan of Shutterfly.  I receive those lovely orange packages a few times a year.  Though I don't recommend them for the larger prints, I do recommend them for photo books.  I tried not having bias going in to the process, because I've used a bunch of different services for photo books in my lifetime.  But there is a reason I keep going back to Shutterfly.

The user interface for me is a much more friendly.  There are two different ways you can create a photobook: the Custom Path or the Simple Path.  I generally use the Custom path because there is a lot more freedom to do your own thing, but I have used Simple Path for just throwing books quickly together.

As far as layouts, there are a plethora of options to choose for layouts and picture placement.  And with the Custom Path, you can go in an edit individual pages even more with the ability to resize, move things around, etc.  It's a dream for people like me.

Shutterfly is always having deals and such that can really save money.

At the time of ordering my main wedding book, Shutterfly did not have lay flat pages.  I wish they did, but ordered my main book without lay-flat, simply because I just wanted to have more freedom to create our main photo book recounting our beautiful wedding.  I ordered over 100 pages to the book and they had buy one get one free for pages at the time of ordering, plus free shipping on orders of $30 (a frequent deal), a magnet for our fridge, and I purchased a few 5x7 photo books with BOGO pricing as well for international family as gifts, then I got a whole bunch of prints from them because they were having a 50% off large prints sale.  All of this is a win for me.

Lastly, Shutterfly has always had quick delivery for it's cheapest delivery option.  I would get the packages 7-10 days after purchasing (since they still have to do the processing and printing of the products).  If I'm just getting prints, I normally get my orange packages sooner than that.

Except like two weeks later they launched lay-flat pages.  So now, they have wonderful lay-flat pages for all your photo book needs!  I'm so upset about that personally because I already spent my budget for wedding pictures and photo books, but I am determined to get our main wedding album with lay-flat pages one day because we have several pages in the book with full spreads (that span across the two pages), another wonderful option that Shutterfly offers.

Again, I might be biased, but you can see why!

For photobook sizing and pricing, click here.

One major annoyance: they have to have barcodes on the back of their books.  Why, Shutterfly, why?  This is incredibly annoying.  I guess I'm just glad they are on the back, but if there is a photo on the back it just can be ruined!  You are the only one that does this to my knowledge!

    Other Options
I would love to give all of you a fair review of all the different services for you, but I simply don't have enough money in order to fully give the experience a fair review (which, to me, includes the quality of the printing).  But, if either of you use the following, let me know and I would love to use your reviews!
    * I have previously created photobooks using Mixbook and did enjoy the experience.  It has been awhile so I can not offer an up-to-date review, but they seem to be adding more options for books, which I am excited about for you!  It also is apparently one of the best out there.

When I first started creating photo books, I used iPhoto.  I found they were pretty pricy and didn't offer discounts and specials so I stopped using them completely.  If this has changed, let me know!

Lastly, here is website that compared some of the photo book companies.

Disclaimer: other than my professional large print pictures, I do order my calendars, photo books, and prints from Shutterfly.  I also have a Shutterfly Share Site to share pictures with our family and friends from the wedding, family events, or other such occasions.  Shutterfly is no way in affiliation with this post, they are simply my favorite, go-to service for photo creations because they have always been easy to use, offer a variety of options, offer frequent discounts and special offers as incentives, and always produce quality printing.
